Guitar
Gérard Joseph Deleplanque en Pierre Joseph Peerens, 1793
The popularity of the guitar in France between about 1680 and 1720 was largely due to the presence of Italian actors and virtuoso players of this instrument. The guitar became a hallmark of the refined, elegant and gallant society and remained in vogue throughout the century. The lavishly decorated instrument displayed here is a late example of this 18th-century French tradition.
