View of Deshima

workshop of Kawahara Keiga, 1833 - 1836

Nagasaki was home to the painter Keiga’s workshop, which specialized in meticulous, documentary depictions of scenes in Japan. Dutch staff on Deshima could buy paintings like these as mementos, to show people at home where they had spent their time. While Japanese and Dutchmen can be distinguished, enslaved people are notably absent.
