Flutist
Lucas Vorsterman (I) (mentioned on object), 1619 - 1675
The flute has always been a popular instrument. In the army this was because of its easily audible, piercing sound, and in genteel settings because of its more dulcet tones. The model played here is made of a single piece of wood and has seven tone holes. The flutist wears 16th-century clothing, making it clear that this is not a portrait but a tronie, or expressive character head.
