Medal of Honour for George, an Enslaved Man

An uprising erupted in the Surinamese district of Nickerie in 1836. George, who worked on the Leasowes Plantation, provided the colonial authorities with crucial information leading to the arrest of a number of enslaved people. He was rewarded with this medal. Colin, the leader of the revolt, was sentenced to death, but to this day he has continued to play a role in the oral tradition of Suriname for predicting the abolition of slavery

    Zilveren penning aan draagoog en draagring. Voorzijde: opschrift. Keerzijde: wapenschild met opschrift, geflankeerd door twee mannen met verentooi, pijlenkoker en boog, staande voor vat en baal binnen omschrift. In 1836 brak in het Surinaamse district Nickerie een opstand uit. George, die op plantage Leasowes werkte, voorzag het koloniale bewind van informatie waarna een aantal tot slaafgemaakten werd gearresteerd. Hij kreeg deze penning als beloning.

Explanatory note

  • De schenkster van de penning, mevrouw Eleonora van Lierop-Dessé (1841-1905), was eigenaresse was van de plantage Leasowes in Nickerie. Zij was zelf de dochter van een vrijgemaakte slavin.
