Explanatory note

  • Een surimono is een luxe uitgevoerde prent waarop beeld met één of meerdere gedichten gecombineerd is. Bij het drukken van een surimono werd vaak gebruik gemaakt van dikker papier, blinddruk en metaal pigmenten, zoals koper- en zilverpoeder. De prenten werden vaak in opdracht van dichters gemaakt en als exclusief geschenk aan vrienden en relaties gegeven.

The artist

Biography

Utagawa Sadafusa was a pupil of Utagawa Kunisada. He also used the art name Gokitei or Gokintei. Later, he moved to Osaka.

Entry

A seated woman wearing a black kimono prepares to grind some greens in a mortar, apparently intended as food for the nightingale, uguisu, in the bird-cage at her side.

Two poems by Haginoya Katsumi [or Kotomi?, possibly the same as Haginoya II Torikane, later Ichiyuken Mimine, a judge of the Honchoren],2Kano, Kaian (ed.), Kyoka jinmei jisho (Dictionary of Names of Kyoka Poets). Kyoto: Rinsen shoten, 1977 (1928), p. 151. and Manyotei Miyako no Otonari [probably not one of the three Otonari’s listed in Kano3Kano, Kaian (ed.), Kyoka jinmei jisho (Dictionary of Names of Kyoka Poets). Kyoto: Rinsen shoten, 1977 (1928), p. 33.]. Both are rather conventional New Year poems.
