Een jonge man zittend naar rechts achter een stenen balustrade, lezend in een openstaande boek rechts. De man is ten halven lijve voorgesteld, op het hoofd een hoge zwarte hoed met linten. Op de balustrade ligt een rode anjer, op de achtergrond bomen.
