Triptych with the Crucifixion

The Crucifixion at centre is set against the background of the city of Utrecht. Thus the biblical scene acquired a certain reality for the medieval viewer. At left is Pope Gregory the Great, who experienced a vision of Christ while celebrating Mass. At right is Saint Christopher who bears the Christ Child and the burden of mankind on his shoulders.

Description
Drieluik met de kruisiging. Op het middenpaneel Christus aan het kruis, met links Maria en rechts Johannes. Op de achtergrond een profiel van de stad Utrecht. Op de binnenzijde van het linker zijpaneel de mis van de heilige Gregorius, op de binnenzijde van de rechter zijpaneel de heilige Christophorus met het Christuskind op de schouders. Gesloten vertonen de zijpanelen een voorstelling van de verkondiging aan Maria in grisaille. Links de engel, rechts Maria, voorgesteld als beelden op voetstukken onder baldakijnen.
