Three plaques from a column

De Grieksche A, c. 1690

The decoration on these plaques was based on designs by Daniël Marot, who may have played a pivotal role in furnishing and decorating the Water Gallery at Hampton Court Palace. The designs were not executed on the more usual smaller tiles, but on larger planes. Making such large plaques must have represented an enormous technical challenge. Each column was originally four or fourand- a-half plaques high.

    Tegel met een blauwe voorstelling met drie musicerende engeltjes zittend op een halfronde boog. Binnen het halfrond vier radiaal geplaatste naar het centrum verjongende banden versierd met Bérain-bandwerk welke samen komen in het hart van de cirkel, dat gevormd wordt door een vrouwenkopje met palmetten in het haar. Tussen de banden hangen druiventrossen.
