Box with Joan van Hoorn’s Coat of Arms

anonymous, c. 1700 - c. 1710

Japanese lacquerware was highly prized in both Asia and Europe. This lacquer box, featuring Joan van Hoorn’s coat of arms on the lid, is decorated along the sides with traditional Japanese motifs. A significant portion of Van Hoorn’s collection remained in the possession of the descendants of his daughter Petronella at Rosendael Castle in Gelderland until in the 20th century.
