In the 19th century the most diverse books were provided with photographic illustrations: from biographies and anthologies of poems to travel accounts and scientific treatises. Photographs are also sometimes found in anuals and instructions booklets, like this 1885 book about billiards. The breaks themselves are depicted in engravings; the photographs may have served chiefly to enliven the book.
