The Arms of the Dutch East India Company and of the Town of Batavia

Jeronimus Becx (II), 1651

These shields feature the arms of the Dutch East India Company, ornamented with Neptune and a mermaid, and those of Batavia, flanked by Dutch lions. According to the inscription on the latter, the city of Jacatra (now Jakarta) was ‘Conquered on 30 May in the year 1619’. That same year Governor-General Jan Pietersz Coen renamed it Batavia and built a castle with dockyards, warehouses and offices.

    De wapens van de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie en van de stad Batavia. Het wapen van de VOC toont een zeilend schip op zee; links van het wapen staat Neptunus, rechts Amphitrite (of een zeemeermin) met een spiegel. Onderaan een festoen van schelpen, bovenaan wapens, vaandels, nautische instrumenten en attributen van de zeevaart. Het wapen van Batavia toont een zwaard bekroond met een lauwerkrans, aan weerszijden leeuwen bewapend met de zeven pijlen en een zwaard, het geheel omsloten door twee gekruiste palmtakken. Het opschrift memoreert de verovering van de stad Jacatra (op de Engelsen en Bantammers) op 30 mei 1619. Onderdeel van de collectie heraldische objecten.
