The Print Seller

Jacob Perkois (signed by artist), 1784

Two boys peruse prints, while the seller patiently looks on. Will the young connoisseur buy anything? This genre scene is by Jacobus Perkois, founder of the Middelburg drawing academy. In this work he creates a colourful scene using only black and white chalk, with touches in watercolour. The subtle expression on the print seller’s face, as if he were refraining from making any unnecessary comments, demonstrates Perkois’ eye for detail.
