This print and the adjacent pendant represent two marble reliefs, which are now in the Museo Canova in Possagno. Depicted is the goddess Venus swooping down upon her beloved Adonis. The young mortal has just been killed while hunting and is mourned by his dogs, several nymphs, and the god of love Cupid. The interplay of light and shadow lend the print an extraordinary sense of depth.

    Marmeren reliëf van Antonio Canova (dat zich in Possagno bevindt), met de voorstelling van Venus die, vergezeld van klagende Eroten, de dode Adonis beweent. Adonis is gedood door het everzwijn en ligt uitgestrekt op de grond. Venus stort zich uit de lucht naar beneden op het dode lichaam van haar geliefde. De voorstelling is een vrijwel letterlijke weergave van de lijkklacht op de dood van Adonis door de antieke Griekse dichter Bion. Volgens Bions elegie bracht het bloed van Adonis rozen voort, die hier aan weerszijden van zijn lichaam zijn voorgesteld. Hij wordt in lakens gewikkeld.
