The Swedish Cooper

Charles X Gustav, King of Sweden, tried to conquer the coastal areas of the Baltic Sea during the Nordic War, thereby endangering the Dutch Republic’s trading position. Jan Zoet described the king as a man who tried to fill his barrel with more power, as it were, through deception. Partly due to the Republic’s intervention, the barrel fell apart.

    Spotprent op de kuiperijen van de Zweedse koning Karel X Gustaaf tegen Denemarken en Pruisen, 1656. Een jonker kijkt toe hoe een kuiper een groot vat maakt. Op de deksel het wapen van de Zeven Verenigde Provincien. Op de achtergrond een vechtpartij. Onder plaat is een lang gedicht in twee kolommen waarin de Zweden en Cromwell worden bespot.
