The Battle of Dogger Bank

Sasaya, 1792

Sasaya, a Japanese lacquerer, was commissioned by a Dutchman to depict the naval Battle of Dogger Bank in the North Sea, probably on the basis of a print. The panel shows the moment at the beginning of the engagement when the Dutch and the British ships lined up for battle.

    Zwart gelakte metalen plaat in een zwartgeverfde houten lijst die gedeeltelijk verguld is. Op de plaat twee vloten in keurige linie tegen over elkaar op kalme zee, in goud en grijs.

    • inscription: ‘Formering der Hollandsche Lienië en het afkomen der Engelsche voor het gevecht op Doggerbank, voorgevallen den 5ten van Augustus, 1781. zynde de Hollandsche Vloot aangevoerd door den Schout by Nacht I. A. Zoutman, en de Engelsche door den Vice Admiraal H. Parker.’
