Diary of Hendrik Doijer (1863-1925)
Hendrik Doijer, 1903-10-02 - 1903-10-12
Henk Doijer – an engineer at the Department of Public Works – keeps a diary from the moment he leaves for Suriname. He writes about the 285 indentured labourers sailing from Java to Suriname. As on the ships from India, there are separate quarters for unmarried men, married couples, and single young women. In practice, supervision is limited and women are regularly intimidated and harassed.
