Explanatory note

Entry

Circular wooden plate covered on both sides with soft iron, bolted on with brass bolts. It has a brass boss in the middle.

Peter M.T. Barlow (1776-1862) invented this correction circle for calculating the effects of the ship’s ironwork on the compass.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 879. It was attached to the side of the binnacle and had the same effect as a Flinders bar, but it did not have to be placed on the fore-and-aft line. At first, the inventor did not think of using it for correction, but used it to effect a doubling of the deviation, which could then be calculated and taken into account. It took some time until Barlow realized that by fitting his plate to the opposite side of the binnacle, he could correct the compass instead of doubling its errors.

Largely due to the increased use of steel in shipbuilding, the practicality of correction circles diminished and they gradually fell into disuse. Julius Constantijn Rijk (1787-1854) tested a correction circle by Barlow (probably this one) on his voyage to the United States in the sloop of war Pallas in 1825.2J.C. Rijk, Generaal Rapport Z.M. Pallas, s.l. 1825, manuscript with 6 appendices in HSM, inv. no. NII (03144), Appendix VI.
