Cephalus and Procris

Magdalena van de Passe (mentioned on object), 1617 - 1634

While hunting, Cephalus accidentally injures his wife Procris as she was spying on him because she suspected him of adultery. Desperately, he tries to save her, but in vain: in the background, the pyre for her funeral is already being prepared. Magdalena de Passe based this mythological scene on a painting by Adam Elsheimer. She dedicated the print to the Flemish painter Rubens, with whom she was in contact.
