Cambay (Banyan)

This Cambay – a housecoat and matching waistcoat – was made in the Netherlands using cotton cloth from India. The robe’s fabric has a blue zigzag pattern derived from European woven silks of the 1720s. European silk with Asian motifs was called ‘bizarre’, and these patterns, in turn, were used in the production of cotton chintz in India.

Description
Gewatteerde kamerjas van sits beschilderd met meerkleurige florale motieven en zigzaglijnen op rood fond, gevoerd met gestreepte zijde. De jas en het bijbehorende vest zijn waarschijnlijk in Nederland vervaardigd. De voering van de jas van gebrocheerde, gestreepte zijde is namelijk mogelijk in Haarlem geweven. Deze stad stond bekend om zijn gestreepte zijden stoffen of 'Haarlemse smallen'. Het vest is voorzien van een linnen rugpand met rijgveter, een werkwijze die onmiskenbaar Europees is en daarom lijkt een herkomst uit India onwaarschijnlijk. Het patroon van de sits is een samenraapsel van Europese stijlelementen uit verschillende perioden in de 18de eeuw, waarbij zijdeweefsels met een zogenaamd kantpatroon uitgangpsunt waren.
