Bunker in the Baltic Sea, on a Former Soviet Naval Base, Liepaja, Latvia

Martin Roemers, 2002 - 2009

Bunkers, air force bases, missile and fuel depots, training grounds, barracks, missile launch facilities, communications centres – all remnants of an era dominated by the Cold War, which held the West and the East in its grip between about 1945 and 1990. Astounded by the beauty of the decay Roemers began recording these haunting ‘relics’ in 1998. What once almost led to the downfall of mankind ultimately proved to be very fragile.
