Breech-Loading Swivel Gun with Two Chambers

? Indonesian Archipelago, 1750 - 1850

Provenance

...; transferred from the Ministerie van Marine (Department of the Navy), The Hague, to the museum, 1883

ObjectNumber: NG-MC-1358

Entry

Bronze breech-loading gun on a swivel.

The gun has a flower-shaped muzzle with a flat surface, and a round barrel. The trunnions are placed between two hoops. At the height of the trunnions there is a sight shaped like a snake on a four-part cushion. The eyes of the bronze yoke are forged around the trunnions, so that the gun cannot be removed from the yoke. The gun has a closed chamber breech and a tubular, hollow cascable button to fit a wooden tiller. With the gun belong two conical chambers with tapered neck and elegant handles (only one chamber depicted); their cylinders have a 4.5 cm calibre. The wedge is missing.
