Pectoral cross

anonymous, c. 1480

This small precious cross probably belonged to a German priest. Later, in the 17th century, it became the property of an Amsterdam mayor, Gerard Schaep. On the basis of the name ‘Bernd Schaph’ inscribed on it, he mistakenly believed that it had something to do with a valuable object inherited from one of his ancestors.

    Borstkruis van goud, bestaande uit een losse voor- en achterzijde met gegraveerde voorstellingen, respectievelijk met het leven van Maria en het lijden van Christus. De helften, gevormd als een doos en deksel zijn door middel van pinnen te verbinden. Aan de doos-helft zijn, in de inspringende hoeken, parels bevestigd. Langs de rand de inscriptie: ave m(a)r(i)a s(an)cte b(er)n(a)rde ora p(ro) nob(is) p(ate)r n(o)s(te)r bern(ar)d(us) schaph MCCCLXI.
