Peasant Fair

Karel van Mander (I) (signed by artist), 1592

The merry, dancing crowd fills the village square. Yet amid the revelry, things have gotten a bit out of hand: a couple embrace intimately on the left, a man vomits in the centre, and a scuffle brews in the background. The urban couple in the right foreground represents the viewer’s disdain. In the caption, however, the draughtsman Karel van Mander also questions their perceived loftiness.
