Fourth Sheet in a Series of Four Featuring Chinese Depictions

Made for the European elite, these illustrations were meant to portray the ‘exotic’ Far East. They contributed to the Eurocentric image of China. Additionally, they played a role in the subsequent craze for Chinoiserie: decorations featuring all kinds of, often inaccurate, ‘Chinese’ elements. This accurate illustration of an enlightened Buddha was later also adapted in Delftware.
