Visit to a Flower Nursery

Jacob Cats (1741-1799), 1791

In the 18th century a visit to a flower nursery was a popular spring outing. Fashionably attired ladies and gentlemen here stroll past seed boxes and racks with potted plants. People from Amsterdam, Leiden, and The Hague all came for this purpose to Haarlem, the centre of floristry. This drawing is an illustration of the month of April from a series of the Twelve Months.
