Beaker vase

Meissener Porzellan Manufaktur, c. 1715

In its early years, the Meissen factory produced so-called Jaspis-porzellan (Jasper porcelain). This name, based on its red colour, was devised by its inventor, Johann Friedrich Böttger. However, it was not actually porcelain, but stoneware, the firing temperature of which is lower than that of porcelain though higher than that of earthenware. The composition of the clay also differs from that of porcelain.
