Garter

anonymous, c. 1815

Garters were tied tightly around the thigh to hold up long, knitted stockings. They were often provided with amorous proverbs or dedications. Embroidered on this garter is: ‘Il ne reviendra pas souvent’ (He will not return often). This could refer to the custom in which a lover ‘conquers’ the garter and keeps it as a memento.
