Three plaques from a column

De Grieksche A, c. 1690

The decoration on these plaques was based on designs by Daniël Marot, who may have played a pivotal role in furnishing and decorating the Water Gallery at Hampton Court Palace. The designs were not executed on the more usual smaller tiles, but on larger planes. Making such large plaques must have represented an enormous technical challenge. Each column was originally four or four and- a-half plaques high.

    Tegel met een blauwe voorstelling van twee vrouwen aan weerszijden van een vaas. Tussen hen in hangt onder de vaas een drielobbig kleed met drie kwasten. De vaas, welke versierd is met een fries van putti en een bok, staat op een hoog voetstuk met voluten en heeft twee grote oren. Naast de vaas staan pilasters, welke bekroond worden door een masker met een vaas vol vruchten op het hoofd. Tussen de vazen slingers.
