Spouted cup and cooling saucer

Meissener Porzellan Manufaktur, c. 1730

Hot beverages, such as coffee, were sometimes drunk in a curious fashion during the 18th century, namely from a saucer! The coffee was poured from the spouted cup into the saucer to cool more quickly. The chinoiserie decorations and the yellow background are typical of Johann Gregorius Höroldt’s designs.

    Schotel met handvatten van beschilderd porselein. De schotel is versierd met een gele fond waarin uitgespaard een vierpas waarin een Höroldt-chinoiserie bestaande uit twee figuren bij een rokende schaal op een voetstuk. De schotel heeft twee spits toelopende handvatten versierd met gouden randen en symmetrisch bladornament in goud, parelmoerluster en rood. De schotel is gemerkt.
