anonymous, anonymous, c. 1550 - c. 1575

In the 16th century rock crystal was thought to be petrified water. This is why decorations often include depictions of marine creatures and other aquatic animals. Neptune, god of the sea, is shown in his element in the middle of this dish.

    Platte, vierlobbige schaal van bergkristal in een montuur van goud met email. Twee hermen als oren. Op de bodem een medaillon met Neptunus rijdende op twee dolfijnen, in mat slijpwerk.
