Communion jug and two cups

The plain jug and cups on view here were used in the Westerkerk in Amsterdam, one of four churches built in the city for Protestant worship during the first half of the 17th century. Protestants repudiated what they felt was the sinful, ostentatious display of wealth in the Catholic Church. They favoured highly austere objects even for the solemn celebration of communion.

    Avondmaalskan van tin. De onversierde buik van de kan gaat geleidelijk in de cilindrische hals over en wordt van deze gescheiden slechts door een ingegrifte lijn, evenals van de basis, welke als een cilindrische band om de bodem gegoten is. Om de bovenste rand een profiel dat naar boven breder uitloopt. Het flauw gewelfde deksel is voorzien van een duimstuk en wordt door middel van een tweekakig scharnier bevestigd aan het ongeveer rechthoekig gebogen handvat.
