Allegory of Farming

Pieter van Meldert (signed by artist), 1624

At the upper left is a farmer with a threshing flail and scythe, and beside him at the upper right a farmer’s wife with a sickle and hoe. The division of the composition into a vertical and two horizontal bands suggests that the drawing served as a design for a stained-glass window. This is the only known work by the glass painter Pieter van Meldert, who was active in Zeeland. None of his stained-glass windows have survived.

    Links bovenaan een boer met een dorsvlegel en een zeis; rechts bovenaan een boerin met een sikkel, een hak (?) en achter haar een hark. In de linker en rechter onderhoeken allerlei voorwerpen die eveneens naar het boerenleven verwijzen: een karrewiel, een halster, manden en kuipen. In het midden een cartouche zonder tekst.
