Photographs of Homemade Aeroplanes and Carts

Jacques-Henri Lartigue, 1910

Lartigue began taking photographs at the age of seven. His father was one of the wealthiest Frenchmen of his day and the photographs bear witness to a life of privilege. We see his older brother ‘Zissou’ taking off in his homemade glider, and he recorded his cousin ‘Oléo’ careening in a cart with his father’s secretary, Monsieur Folletête. Lartigue was discovered later on, and his dynamic snapshot style was subsequently widely imitated.
