Poster Saneren Deporteren Speculeren (Purge Deport Speculate)

Steef Davidson, 1971

From around 1970 the Aktiegroep Nieuwmarkt (Nieuwmarkt Pressure Group) protested against the housing shortage and the Municipality of Amsterdam’s plans for depopulating the city centre. They included ample space for motorways, offices, and construction of an underground railway system. Suburbanization would mean large-scale demolition of the old city. Inhabitants were to move to new housing estates outside of the city. In the poster that municipal ambition is indicated by ‘deport,’ a word that had become emotionally charged due to the war.
