Octagonal Box

anonymous, c. 1904

The designs of Viennese decorative artist Josef Hoffmann are characterized by their basic geometric form. He often used the square and the cube as his points of departure. The clarity of his design principle greatly stimulated the modernization of decorative art. Here too, the geometry of this box is emphasized by means of a spartan, regular decoration with semi-precious stones.
