Monkey

anonymous, 1850 - 1870

Japanese arts and crafts often feature animals as subjects and hold up a gently humorous mirror to people. This monkey was fired in the kilns of the Hirado Domain in south-western Japan. In addition to vases, bowls and plates, many objects for interior decoration were crafted there.
