Gin Jug

anonymous, c. 1750

Humorous drinking vessels in the shape of a guzzling figure seated on a barrel were popular in Europe in the early 18th century. They were made of Delft earthenware, as well as Japanese porcelain. The head is detachable and a European copper tap has been added.

Description
Jeneverkruik van porselein, beschilderd in onderglazuur blauw. De kruik is in de vorm van een jolige Hollandse man zittend op een ton, een fles vasthoudend in zijn geheven linkerhand en een glas in zijn andere hand. Het hoofd is los van het lichaam en dient als dop; op het hoofd een geveerde hoed. Voorin de ton is een gat gemaakt voor een messing kraantje. De ton rust op een voetstuk met met voluutornamenten in Europese stijl; het voetstuk is versierd met bladranken. Blauw-wit.
