Eggplants

Ōtagaki Rengetsu, 1850 - 1855

The Bhuddist monk-painter Rengetsu had a characteristic, cursive form of writing. With a clever play on words, her poem reflects on the fruits of life and extols ‘eggplants’ and the triumph of ‘achieving a goal.’ The two words share the same pronunciation nasu.

    Hangrolschildering in inkt en kleur op papier met een voorstelling van twee aubergines, met links een gedicht: ' 世のなかに ミのなりいて々 おもうこと な須ハめて多き 名尓こそあか介れ', 'yo no naka ni, minonari idete, omou koto, nasu wa medetaki, nani koso akakere'. Houten doos met papieren hoes.
