18-cm Palliser Shell

Puntvormige 18 cm granaat, rood geverfd. De granaat is 41.5 cm lang en heeft een kaliber van 175 mm. De granaat heeft twee ringen nokken voor een getrokken loop met drie trekkende velden en in de bodem is een bus van een zachter metaal gegoten met een vulgat. Onder de neus zijn drie ondiepe gaten aangebracht, voor de munitie-kraan. De Palliser shell MK II 7 inch RML.

Explanatory note

  • Palliser granaten waren gehard door een koelingsproces (zgn. 'glasharde granaten'). Zij waren bedoeld voor getrokken voorlaadgeschut. De Nederlandse Marine gebruikte vanaf 1869 18 cm Armstrong geschut.

Entry

A pointed 18-cm shell, painted red.

The shell is 41.5 cm long and has a 175 mm calibre. It has studs for a rifled barrel with three grooves and a section of a softer metal in the bottom with a closed filling hole. Below the nose it has three shallow indentations for the ammunition crane.

The inventory describes this projectile as a Palliser shot, but the measurements point to a Palliser shell MK II 7-inch RML. Palliser shells were hardened by means of a chilling process (so-called ‘chilled projectiles’). They were used for muzzle-loading rifled ordnance. The Dutch Navy used 18-cm Armstrong ordnance from 1869 onwards.
