Swan gun

Jan Knoop, 1700 - 1799

During the 17th and 18th century swans, geese and ducks regularly featured on the menu. Hunters in small boats could use this type of long gun to hit an entire group of waterfowl with a single shot of hail from a distance. This weapon has an exceptionally long barrel of almost three metres. Hunters used the sliding bolt on the lockplate to prevent the weapon from firing accidentally.

  • Description

    De staart van de slotplaat fungeert als schuifveiligheid en is voorzien van een hard gesoldeerde duimpal; het slot is onbewerkt op een gegraveerd acanthusblad en een signatuur na. De ronde loop is extreem lang. De wortelnotenhouten kolf is in reliëf gesneden met onder meer acanthusbladeren; de greep heeft een wangplaat. Het ijzeren beslag bestaat uit zes laadstokkokers, een S-vormige schroefplaat, een aan de voorzijde gevorkte trekkerbeugel, en een kolfkap met onregelmatig gevormde randen; de laadstok is voorzien van een ijzeren kap.
