Christ Child

anoniem, c. 1510

This nude boy is represented in his future role as saviour of the world. This is indicated by the globe he holds and his gesture of benediction. Statues of the naked Christ Child were often dressed with real clothes and a metal crown. The statue’s base bears the hallmarks of Mechelen, a guarantee of the quality of the painting.

Description
Het naakte kind staat rechtop met zijn rechterbeen iets naar voren op een geprofileerd voetstuk. Het zegenent met zijn rechterhand, op de linker houdt het de wereldbol. Het gezicht met spits, glimlachend mondje en iets toegeknepen ogen wordt omlijst door krullen, die op het voorhoofd platgelegd zijn, maar bij de oren en in de nek afstaan. Onder de rechtervoet het mechelse stadsmerk: de drie balken, dit ook op de onderkant van het voetstuk. In het midden van de bovenste hollijst van het voetstuk het Mechelse keurmerk voor het vergulden: de letter M.
Inscriptions / marks
- mark, in the top concave moulding of the socle, punched: ‘M’ (the Mechelen polychromy quality mark)
- mark, under the right foot and on the socles’s underside, branded: three vertical pales (the Mechelen wood quality mark)
