Couple in a Landscape, Adriaen van de Velde, 1667

Couple in a Landscape, Adriaen van de Velde, 1667

oil on canvas, h 148cm × w 178cm. More details

Adriaen van de Velde did not follow in the footsteps of his father and brother, the celebrated marine painters Willem van de Velde i and II, but specialized in landscapes and cattle paintings. With great precision, Adriaen has here portrayed a family in a hilly forest landscape, lavishing attention on their costly clothing. Their identity is not known, but they will certainly have commissioned this painting.
