Charley Toorop often worked outdoors in summer and sought a freer way of painting in the sunlight. Here, the branches catch the light and stand out against the clear blue sky. Toorop chose to crop the image of lilacs, as if the flowers continue to grow freely beyond the edges of the canvas.
