Sunflowers
Charley Toorop, 1936
The execution of these sunflowers is strikingly different from that of the roses in the adjacent selfportrait, which Toorop painted in artificial light. She depicted three sunflowers, all at different stages of their life cycle, with a much looser style. Toorop was interested in growth, flowering and decay. This can also be seen in the self-portraits she made regularly during her lifetime.
