The Great Assembly of 1651

Bartholomeus van Bassen, c. 1651

This is the Ridderzaal (Hall of Knights) at the Binnenhof in The Hague. Hanging from the ceiling are Southern Netherlandish and Spanish flags captured during the war. The representatives of the seven provinces of the Dutch Republic are gathered in the hall. When Stadholder William II, son of Frederick Henry, dies at the end of 1650, most of the provinces decide after lengthy deliberations not to appoint a new stadholder on 21 August 1651. The war is over, and – as they concur – the country is more than able to face the future without the Oranges.

  • Description

    Interieur van de grote zaal op het Binnenhof, Den Haag, tijdens de grote vergadering van de Staten Generaal in 1651. Aan het plafond hangen op de vijand veroverde vlaggen en vaandels. Op het schilderij is een metalen flap bevestigd. Wanneer deze geopend is, is een voorstelling van de grote vergadering zichtbaar. Op de voorgrond staat een tafel met boeken, een zandloper en een inktstel. Op de tafel een kleed met de spreuk 'Concordia res parvae crescunt'. Als de flap gesloten is wordt een deel van de zaal, afgeschermd door een wand met wandtapijten, getoond.

Explanatory note

  • Een deel van de vaandels die aan de dakbalken hangen waren buitgemaakt door Maurits bij de veldslagen bij Turnhout (1597) en Nieuwpoort (1600). Datering gebaseerd op afgebeelde gebeurtenis en sterfdatum Van Bassen.
