Portrait of Louis Napoleon, King of Holland

Charles Howard Hodges, 1809

In 1795 French troops invaded the Netherlands. The country became an ally of France and enjoyed a large degree of independence, until 1806 when Napoleon seized power and made his brother Louis Napoleon King of Holland. Louis showed sympathy for his new kingdom and supported Dutch interests. This had not been Napoleon’s intention and in 1810 he forced his brother to abdicate.

Description
Portret van Lodewijk Napoleon, koning van Holland van 1806 tot 1810. Staande, ten voeten uit, in een landschap. Gebarend met de linkerhand, zijn steek in de rechterhand. Hij is gekleed in het uniform van een kolonel van lijfwacht te voet met het grootkruis van de koninklijke orde van de Unie van Holland en het officierskruis van het Legioen van Eer.
