In 1912-1913 paintings by Italian Futurists were exhibited in various Dutch cities. Their picturing of movement with ‘lines of force,’ as they called them, was unprecedented. While Futurism became a hype in the newspapers, it found less resonance among Dutch artists. An exception was the Gouda ceramist and painter Chris Lanooy. His dynamic composition of rays and circles evokes the image of an explosion, or a car racing by.
