oil on panel, h 30.8cm × w 21.2cm Catalogue entry

Mostaert worked mostly in Haarlem. This portrait may have been painted when he was associated with Margaret of Austria. If so, the sitter could have been a member of the Habsburg courts at Mechelen or Brussels, where at least one man of African origin is recorded. His sword, and proud bearing mark him out as an individual of importance. His hat-badge records a pilgrimage to Halle, near Brussels.
