De voorstelling is gebaseerd op de Bijbeltekst uit Handelingen 14:8-11. De apostel Paulus en Barnabas komen aan in Lystra, een plaats in het huidige Turkije, om het christelijk geloof te prediken. Hier wordt Paulus omringd door enkele mensen. Sommigen zijn ziek, anderen hebben een beperking. In de Rooms-Katholieke Bijbelvertaling en de Statenvertaling wordt er gesproken over de man linksvooraan als 'kreupel zijnde'. Dit was de 17e-eeuwse generieke aanduiding voor het hebben van een beperking aan voeten of benen. Omdat de man geloof zou hebben, kon Paulus in de naam van God, de voeten van de man genezen, zodat hij zou kunnen lopen. Op de achtergrond is een zuil te zien van de tempel van Jupiter of Mercurius, de goden waarvoor Apostel en Barnabas worden aangezien na deze wonderbaarlijke gebeurtenis.
