Jeroboam Sacrificing to the Idols

Jacques Ignatius de Roore, c. 1704 - c. 1744

Jeroboam, the King of Israel, enjoined his people to idolatry to prevent their contact with the Kingdom of Judah. When he tried to arrest a defiant priest during a pagan sacrifice, his hand withered and the altar shattered. He had trespassed God’s First Commandment: ‘Thou shalt have no other gods before me.’ De Roore impressed his contemporaries with such depictions of complex stories.

Description
De afgoderij van Jerobeam. Tijdens het offeren aan afgoden op het plein voor de tempel breekt het altaar in stukken. De koning, de priesters en het volk kijken in afgrijzen toe. Links worden offerdieren voor de slacht klaargemaakt, rechts staan naast het altaar kostbare wierookvaten en ander vaatwerk.
